TALLAHASSEE, FL (WWSB) – Catching a train ride from Tampa to Orlando may one day be a reality.
Brightline, a privately run passenger-rail service, is pursuing an Orlando-to-Tampa route.
The Chief Operating Officer of Brightline, Patrick Goddard, calls the Tampa Bay market a "natural extension" for the service.
Goddard says they are currently engaged in the request for proposal process, which is the first step needed to extend the system to the Tampa Bay region.
The train currently runs between Miami and West Palm Beach and is expected to reach Orlando in 2021.
On Friday, Governor Scott announced the Florida Department of Transportation has received a proposal to lease property owned by the Central Florida Expressway Authority to build a high-speed passenger train service along Interstate Four.
